About Marybeth, National Geographic Author, Writer

Curious Explorer. Award-winning author.

Gutsy Traveler: A woman, like travel expert Marybeth Bond, stands among purple flowers, raising her arms and smiling in front of a wooden building in bright sunlight.
Polar bear tracking and snorkeling with beluga whales in the northern Canadian Arctic.

Marybeth knows travel. She has hiked, biked, dived, danced and trekked across all seven continents – from the depths of the Flores Sea near Komodo Island to the summit of Kilimanjaro.

More recently, she tracked polar bears and snorkeled with beluga whales in the Canadian Arctic, then kayaked among icebergs in Antarctica.

Somewhere in between, four years of studying in Paris earned her two degrees – and a taste for good wine and strong cheeses.

Twelve books (three with National Geographic), countless travel articles, and numerous TV and radio appearances have built her devoted fanbase. She won the esteemed Lowell Thomas, Gold Award for the Best Travel Book of the Year from the Society of American Travel Writers Foundation.

Find relaxation in quaint Savannah, Georgia with decorative architecture and lush green landscape throughout the downtown. It is an urban forest where Spanish Moss hangs from giant oak trees.

There is plenty of eating, dining and shopping throughout the meandering streets and brick paved roads.

When visiting Savannah, a great choice of stay is the President’s Quarters, a historic bed and breakfast located on Oglethorpe Square. The inn offers spacious rooms and luxurious comfort. There are hors d’oeuvres and wine each evening and fresh, home cooked breakfast each morning in the dining area.

Built in 1855 the President’s Quarters was named most romantic bed and breakfast for 2008 in Savannah Magazine. There are sixteen bedrooms, all with private baths. Owner Steve Green purchased the inn in April 2007 and completely renovated the structure.

“We spent the last year and half refurbishing, gutting every bathroom, repainting and carpeting,” states innkeeper Jane Sales.

Located off of the Atlantic, count on great seafood. For a casual indulgence of fresh seafood, check out the Crab Shack. Gators welcome guests as they enter into the wooden, oceanesque themed restaurant.

Recommended is the sampler platter that gives hungry travelers a taste of crab, shrimp, mussel, shrimp, sausage, corn and potatoes. There is no fried food. Seafood fare is baked, grilled or broiled.

A number of tours are offered to learn about the history and haunted tales of Savannah. It is the 8th most popular tourist spot. Choose from walking tours, trolley tours or a riverboat cruise. Attractions and museums surround the area. Find such attractions as the Ships of the Sea Maritime Museum and Telfair Museum of Art and Sciences and Telfair’s Jepson Center for the Arts.

Artistic flare highlights the city, marked by The Savannah School of Art and Design, a national top ranked design school.

Southern hospitality is at its best in this Atlantic coast city offering well preserved historical sites, shopping, dining and scenic surroundings.
