The Gutsy Traveler

Meet you in the Greek islands: Cruise to Cyprus, Rhodes and beyond.

View of the town of Lindos on Rhodes

Join me on a Greek Islands cruise where ancient history and breathtaking landscapes await. The Greek Islands beckon travelers from around the world to their sun-drenched shores.

Mykonos, Santorini, Cyprus, and Rhodes — these names evoke images of whitewashed buildings clinging to cliff edges, azure waters lapping against golden beaches, and streets steeped in history and tradition.

My husband, Gary, and I decided that cruising through the Greek islands was the best way to explore numerous destinations within a short timeframe while enjoying the luxury of unpacking just once. As we embarked on an eight-day Holland America cruise through these storied islands, we quickly embraced the easygoing rhythm of life here.

As we sailed through the azure waters of the Aegean Sea, the island of Rhodes greeted us with its formidable medieval walls, rising dramatically from the sea. The charm of its medieval town, with towering fortifications and cobblestone streets, was immediately captivating. Every corner revealed fragments of ancient ruins, each telling a story of a bygone era.

The imposing Palace of the Grand Master stood as a testament to Rhodes’ rich history, while the evocative Street of the Knights transported us to the era of the Crusades. Walking through these ancient pathways, we felt the echoes of centuries past, making our journey through Rhodes a truly immersive historical experience.

Our adventure in Lindos began with a breathtaking descent down steep streets that offered sweeping panoramas of the azure Aegean Sea. The whitewashed houses, clustered together like pearls, created a striking contrast against the deep blue backdrop of the ocean. As we wandered through the labyrinthine streets, we were enchanted by the charm of this small town.

Each corner revealed a new delight: quaint tavernas serving mouthwatering local delicacies, and artisanal workshops where traditional crafts were on display. The vibrant atmosphere was infectious, and we found ourselves immersed in the local culture. Our journey led us to a rooftop restaurant, where we enjoyed cold beers and pizza while taking in panoramic views of the picturesque harbor below. The adjacent sandy beach, with its inviting azure waters, tempted us to take a refreshing plunge. After a leisurely swim, we felt rejuvenated and ready to continue our exploration of this enchanting town.

Cyprus

Next on our itinerary was the island of Cyprus. The discovery of the city of Paphos and the intricate, well-preserved mosaics in the floors of the ancient Roman villas was the cultural highlight of our Greek Island Cruise.

Dating back to the Roman period, the mosaics of Paphos are among the finest examples of ancient artistry in the Eastern Mediterranean. These intricate floor decorations adorned the opulent villas of the city’s elite, serving as both decorative elements and symbols of wealth and status.

One of the most famous sites showcasing these mosaics is the House of Dionysus, located within the Paphos Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Named after the god of wine, this grand villa boasts a series of elaborate mosaics depicting scenes from Greek mythology, including the triumph of Dionysus, the god of wine, and various episodes from the tales of Greek heroes and gods. As we marveled at the intricate mosaics, our guide regaled us with tales from Greek mythology. We found ourselves chuckling at the mischievous and all-too-human antics of the gods. These ancient stories, filled with drama and humor, captivated our imagination.
