Watch this to the end to see what the men do when they’re in a trance. I got a chance to see this rare Javanese dance performed in rural villages and accompanied by gamelan music. Dancers are calling the spirits to possess them. When a dancer is possessed, he no longer performs regular dancing, but carries out dangerous acts, such as eating broken glass, coconut shell and fire. The dancers are healed by the shaman or man with the whip, with prayers and water.

Cosmopolitan called on Marybeth for advice on how its readers could avoid similar trouble. Here’s what she had to say.

1. Ask to be assigned a room above the ground floor, especially if there are sliding glass doors — an entry point offering easier views of and access into your room. Once inside your room, check the door and window locks.

2. Hang the Do Not Disturb sign on the door when you’re out so would-be thieves will think the room is occupied.

3. If the desk clerk mentions your room number out loud and there are other guests around, request that you be given a different room.

4. If you’re planning to arrive at night, have the rental car agency or hotel arrange for someone to accompany you to and from parking lots.

5. If you use the pre-order menu that hangs on your door all night, don’t mark a first name or the number of people in the room — this reveals to anyone passing your room that you’re alone.

6. Pull the drapes shut as soon as you walk into your hotel room. If you plan on staying at an inexpensive motel, pack some safety pins and duct tape so you can make sure the curtains are completely closed.

7. If you like to walk around naked in your hotel room (no judgment!), cover the peephole on the interior side of the door with a Band-Aid. This way you can easily peel it off when you need to peek out.

For more safety tips, check out Marybeth Bond’s Website, The Gutsy Traveler.

Daughter Annalyse trained with us and was along for part of the ride, and goddaughter Laura Maxwell came along as well.

Over the course of two months, we biked 3,114 miles from the Pacific to the Atlantic, through five National Parks and seven cities, beginning in our hometown of San Francisco and ending in New York City. In the process we raised $52,000 for the National Osteoporosis Foundation for research and education.

While I’m quite sure this is not something I’m ever going to do again, I’m very proud of what we accomplished–and as a chance to bond with my daughters and meet people across America, it was an amazing experience.

Olga Murray spends half her time in Sausalito and the other half in Kathmandu, where she works to buy girls out of bondage in a rural farming district in southern Nepal. Poverty forces families to sell their daughters, as young as 7 years old, as domestic slaves or worse.

She learned about the practice of child slavery 10 ago and since then has worked tirelessly to find a solution. Olga’s new program pays parents to keep their daughters at home and in school. However, in lieu of cash, her foundation, Nepal Youth Foundation, offers families a piglet, which they can raise on kitchen scraps and sell, ultimately receiving about as much as they would from their daughter’s labor. Girls receive a school uniform, notebooks, pencils, a school bag, a daily snack at school, and most importantly, an education.

“What began as a pilot project with 37 families now includes 2,500 girls,” she marveled.

“I realized that education is the best way to ensure a better life for these children,” Olga says, knowing this would become the cornerstone of her work. Over the last 19 years, not only has the number of supported children expanded, but so have the ways in which they are helped. In addition to scholarships, NYF funds the salaries of more than 65 teachers in various poor rural areas of Nepal, and teacher training in a country where teachers are not trained. Her foundation also runs two boarding schools and nutritional programs in Kathmandu.

Olga was an attorney who worked for 37 years helping write opinions for two California Supreme Court chief justices in San Francisco. Today she crisscrosses the globe to help children.

She has been a guest on “The Oprah Winfrey Show,” NPR, and National Geographic Weekend, and was honored by the Dalai Lama and the former king of Nepal.
